Following the success of the 2023/24 pilot Work Experience Programme, the Mayor of Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council announced that it is set to run again for 2025.
Once again, the Council is partnering with early talent experts Workplus to offer a coordinated work experience project for pupils in post primary schools in the Borough.
All post primary schools and employers in the Borough are invited to take part in the scheme which is designed to connect local employers with future talent as well as build transversal skills in young people.
The pilot project was recently shortlisted in UK–wide public sector awards and the Council is hoping to continue to build on its success.
Launching the project, Mayor of Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council, Councillor Neil Kelly, said, “As a Council, we plan to build on the success of last year’s project which saw local schools connecting with employers across the Borough through meaningful and inclusive work experience. It proved a successful initiative for employers, pupils and schools.”
Lucy Marshall, Community Manager at Workplus, said, “It is great to partner with the Council again in this initiative which is intended to benefit both young people and employers. Feedback from last year’s programme included young people finding employment as a result of their work experience, having a better understanding of a particular role or sector, and also feeling more equipped for the next step in their education.”
Gordon Cross, Director at Revolution Productions, said, “This work experience programme makes it easier for employers to connect with schools and enable young people to see the breadth of opportunities on their doorstep – from multi–national companies to thriving micro businesses. Last year we had the pleasure of having a group of young people who were able to gain an insight into our work and enjoy hands–on event and media production experience. It also meant some pupils were able to put theory into practice so it’s also a great way of bringing learning to life. We’re looking forward to being involved in the programme again.”
Patricia McKee, Head of Careers at Integrated College Glengormley, said, “This is a valuable and enriching initiative and it’s great to have a co–ordinated, collaborative Borough–wide approach. It helps students understand what is available for them beyond school and give them real world experience in sectors that interest them.”
Workplus will support employers throughout the project, helping them to create a work experience programme and profile their company to participating schools.
Employers across the Borough are invited to partake in the scheme. An Employer Breakfast will take place on Tuesday 19th November at Mossley Mill, Newtownabbey.
